Residents and local businesses are not happy
Residents from a village in Cambridgeshire have been left furious that it is dark at night.
The villagers said that the new LED streetlights leave some areas in “total darkness.”
Cambridgeshire County Council wants to replace the ageing 90-year-old lamps with better, more energy-efficient LED lights.
However, one local, Mr Candle, says he now has to use a torch at night to see.
“I always wear a highly visible jacket at night, but now I have to use a torch too. It’s just not good enough – it should be brighter at night.”
Another added: “We’ve been plunged back into the Dark Ages. I’m considering wearing a suit of armour to feel safer.”
The local pub has reportedly started opening during the day only, since no one can find it after dark.
In a bid not to lose customers, the fish and chip shop are now handing out free torches with every order.
However, one resident thinks the new lights are much better, acknowledging they are “dimmer” than their predecessors, but allows the community to “reconnect with nature.”
In a statement, the council said: “We’re disappointed to learn that some people don’t like the eco-friendly streetlights.
“Following feedback from residents, we will continue to roll out the new LED streetlights over the next 18 months.”
