Residents have been left clueless
Residents across the country have been left concerned as a major news outlet appears to have fallen off the internet.
The Colchester Gazette, among other Newsquest titles, are unable to be accessed on the world wide web.
The outage, first noticed early this morning by Derek from Wivenhoe, who refreshes the Gazette homepage 47 times daily to check for pothole updates, has plunged the the city into what some are calling a “temporary information blackout” and others, more accurately, “a bit annoying”.
Social media has struggled to fill the void. One local Facebook group attempted to recreate the Gazette experience by sharing 23 blurry photos of clouds, a debate about bin collection times, and a comment thread accusing a lamppost of antisocial behaviour.
At the time of writing, a pigeon was seen loitering suspiciously outside the Gazette’s office, possibly seeking work.
Update: Newsquest websites appear to be back online now, after a cleaner unplugged the server to do some hoovering.
