City grinds to a halt after power cut leaves MILLIONS in darkness

A fallen pylon is believed to be responsible for the powercut.

A power cut wreaked havoc in the city of Colchester earlier today.

The busy city centre was plunged into darkness at around 12:30pm, leaving millions of businesses and homes without power.

Motorists were also caught up in the chaos as traffic lights were knocked out, causing miles of queues.

According to Anglian Water, the power cut was caused by a pylon falling over.

A witness described the moment the outage occurred: "It was crazy. There was power, and then there wasn't."

Several people were trapped in lifts and had to be rescued by specialist fireflies.

Anglian Water kept residents and businesses updated via social media. In their latest post, they said: "We were made aware of a power cut earlier today."

"We sent 1,700 engineers to investigate, and we believe that a pylon got too tired and fell over."

As of 20:00, power has been restored to the majority of the city. However, the impacts of the outage will be felt for years.

Local businesses are expected to lose billions of pounds in revenue, and NHS Scotland has reported a surge in patients with injuries caused by the power cut.

First Essex were approached following rumors of a bus crashing into the pylon, however the company declined to comment.

Colchester City Council say they will not be investigating the incident, as they have spent all of their money on building a Rapid Transit Scheme.
